Waiting Room Mural

A hand-painted mural for the waiting room in the Aspen Centre, a specialist Eating Disorder unit. Painted collaboratively with the patients over a series of evening sessions, to provide a grounding backdrop that reflects the values of the service.

The design was created by combining design elements that both the staff and patients were keen include. Focusing on the brief, I included subtle visual metaphors of hope, journey, growth, freedom, strength, wisdom and guidance.

The trees are Aspen trees to represent the name of the unit, and the pair of deer represent the wisdom and guidance of the therapeutic relationship between staff and patients. The flowers represent growth, and the birds represent the journey towards freedom from an eating disorder. In colour psychology green is the balancer of the heart and emotions, so I used a variety of different green hues to harmoniously bring the overall design together.
